Los Angeles: Actor Alden Ehrenreich is set to join Michael B Jordan and Austin Butler in Universal Pictures’ upcoming action drama Miami Vice ’85, a new take on the classic 1980s television series.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy, the film will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-1980s Miami.

Miami Vice ’85 is inspired by the pilot episode of the landmark Universal Television series, which became a cultural phenomenon and influenced everything from fashion to filmmaking.

The new film will be shot for IMAX and is scheduled for release on 19 May 2028, with production set to begin later this year.

The film is produced by Dylan Clark through Dylan Clark Productions and Kosinski.

Gilroy’s screenplay is based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich for the original series, which was executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer previously worked on an earlier draft of the screenplay.

For Ehrenreich, the role comes after his first Tony Award win earlier this year for his performance in Becky Shaw.

The actor’s upcoming projects also include Anton Corbijn’s A Talent for Murder, in which he stars opposite Helen Mirren and which will premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival, and The Last Resort alongside Daisy Ridley, scheduled for theatrical release in 2027.

His other recent credits include Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Zach Cregger’s Weapons.
